In view of the state of the vineyard existing in the area and the possibilities of the reappearance, not only of itself, but of an ancestral tradition, a group of viticulturists and wine-cellar owners of the area began to undertake the steps for the recognition, by the corresponding Administration, of a quality stamp that defends the wines obtained in this area.

In 1995 the Commission Administrator from la Ribera del Arlanza is formed with the aim of carrying out the appropriate work to obtain the Denomination of Origin for the wines elaborated in the Ribera del Arlanza.

This Commission Administrator’s effort has been prized by means of granting the Consejería de Agrícultura y Ganadería de la junta de Castilla y León (Order of the 23rd February, 1998, B.O.C. & L. 27th February 1998) the recognition of the right to use the mentioning of "Wine of the Region" for table wines originating from the viticultural region of Ribera del Arlanza. For this to happen the Commission Administrator becomes an Association of Wines of the Region "Ribera del Arlanza".

Since then, the Association has been accomplishing a series of actions aiming at promoting and controlling the wines elaborated in the region.

As regards to the promotion, the Association is carrying out a diverse number of actions, such as:

  • Attendance to various fair competitions specialized in this matter.
  • Advertising campaigns in the different means of communication.
  • Direct presentations and promotions of the product.

As for the control, a most exhaustive control of the vineyards and the wines of the area are being carried out from the Association. This control is based on the following.

  • A record of the vineyards and elaborating and bottling wine cellars in the area.

  • A periodic follow up of the vineyards and wines.

  • A control of the grape picking by means of the follow up of the ripening in the different areas and collection of samples for a subsequent analysis.

  • Control of the entrance of grapes in the cellars by means of grape harvest inspectors.

  • An assessment of the different types of wine, by an analytical and sensorial test.

  • A presentation of the corresponding counterlable of the wines, which satisfactorily pass the control above, mentioned.

  • A follow up of the counterlable batches in order to control its evolution.

All this promotion and control finally ends by offering the market a product with a contrasting and certified quality with the corresponding counterlable.

This association plans to apply for the concession of the Denomination of origin "Ribera del Arlanza" since the work that has been carried out in these past years as regard to the control and promotion, is the same as the work carried out by the Council Regulators of the Denominations of Origin. Firm steps have been taken in the accomplishment of an agronomical survey and a characterization study of the wines elaborated in this area.
